Businesses simply can’t overlook the impact that social media can have on their brand image, customer engagement, and sales. However, managing social media can be time-consuming, discouraging, and it does require a unique set of skills.
So, is it “better” or necessary to outsource to a social media manager? It depends! Read my pros and cons list to explore what’s best for YOU and your business.
Pros:
Professional expertise on content, algorithms, platform updates, etc.
Saving time that can be focused on other business aspects instead
Consistent online presence
Access to valuable tools & analytics
No need to “keep up” with social media updates, trends, etc.
No social media burnout
Cons:
Cost/budget
Dependence on a single person

Lack of control
Potential misalignment in communication or goals
Conclusion + Advice:
The biggest advantage to hiring a social media manager (in my opinion) is the relief of having someone skilled in your platform(s) of choice so you can focus your time on your actual business instead.
But that’s not always possible for everyone. Many small businesses don’t have the budget to retain a resource like this – and that is ok!
Being in charge of your own account has its advantages, the biggest being that no one knows your brand or business like you do.
Here are two ways you can maintain control of your account AND implement helpful resources without breaking the bank on a social media manager:
1. Request a social media audit or custom strategy plan
Many social media agencies offer auditing services, which dissect your online presence and return with suggestions and recommendations for you to implement. As a one-time fee, this is a great option that guides you in the right direction so you can post intentionally.
2. Opt in to a social media marketer that you trust
Whether that means joining their email list or simply following them on social media, this is one way to keep up with resources and possible tips + tricks from a respected social media marketer. Keep in mind, there is only so much you can learn for free. However, the right professional may share future opportunities that fit your current capacity.
Hiring a social media manager can be a valuable investment for your business. You can make sure you find the right fit by requesting a discovery call, asking questions, and requesting testimonials before going into business.
However, you might not need a manager. If you opt to grow on your own, you do need to dedicate ample time to your online presence. It’s not always easy (which is why I recommend looking into the additional resources above) but with the proper discipline and dedication, you can do it.
