Tips for getting confident on reels (from someone who prefers being behind the camera)

I don’t think any business owner could have anticipated the need for short-form videos to promote their services.

If you dread the thought, you are not alone!

The truth is, video content is a skill.

I’m not talking about fancy editing or transitions (which are also a skill), I’m talking about the simple act of showing up on a video and not absolutely hating your hair, how you sound, how silly you feel, how long it takes you to record your topic, and so on.

It used to take me an hour to record one reel because of all my doubts and insecurities.

But after pushing past those insecurities and learning a few things along the way, I now knock out reels (with editing and everything) in 15 minutes.

Here are some tips for more confident reels:

Keep the end goal in sight: The purpose of your social media is to attract warm leads for your business. The purpose is not to go viral, so don’t let low likes and follows shoot your confidence down. You are looking to resonate with your ideal customer and speak only to them.

Start simple: Depending on your dislike for reels, start small! Become more comfortable posting regular stories, show behind-the-scenes (without your face at first, if you prefer), and ease into the idea of “showing up” in whatever way you can.

Bonus: You can slowly build your confidence by sharing reels to your “Close Friends” first.

Don’t go in blindly: Create an outline or talking/filming points for every reel you plan to record. I like to give myself 3-5 takes (it may be more for you, especially when starting out) to make slight changes in how I say things, how I look, etc. and then choose my favorite one.

Find the approach that works for you: Some businesses like lip syncing and dancing, others do not, and others find their own happy medium. There isn’t one right way to succeed on reels, so experiment with approaches that feel authentic to you or that you can see becoming authentic to you.

Practice: I know you hate this tip, but videos DO NOT come naturally to most of us. Be kind to yourself for trying something new and know that the only way to improve is by doing. They won’t all feel great, but when it comes to reels and your limited time for them as a busy business owner, “done” is better than “perfect.”

Looking back on my first reel versus my current reels….the progress is night and day! But I couldn’t get to today’s reels without all the lessons and practice along the way.

Be patient and kind to yourself.
